My Artist’s Conception of Kepler 13b

Artists depiction of Kepler 13b

Kepler 13b is one of the largest of the planets found outside of our solar system by the Kepler mission. Roughly nine times the mass of Jupiter and twice it’s size, it orbits very close to it’s companion star. It’s close orbit of about 3% the distance of Earth to the sun gives it a orbital period that is measured in hours, it takes about forty two hours to complete one orbit. In this depiction the planet is losing it’s atmosphere both by centrifugal force created by it’s rapid speed and it’s close proximity to the solar winds of the star. A vapor-trail follows the orbit of the planet and is pushed outward by the output of the star. While there is no evidence to support this process on Kepler 13b, I felt it helps illustrate the extreme nature of such a planet.

This image is modeled and rendered using LightWave 3D by Newtek. The solar flares sculpted in Sculptris by Pixologic. Adobe Photoshop was used to complete this image by enhancing the brightness of the star and painting in some of the atmospheric details. I would like to thank fellow IAAA member Dan Durda for advising me on making the scene look more realistic.
