Wright Brothers Digital Illustration

Few images are as iconic as the takeoff of the Wright Flyer, a great image to base an advertising campaign around. In addition to magazine advertisements, there was a possibility that the image would need to be large enough to be printed as a graphic for events. The solution was to create this iconic image digitally. After some research, I created a 3D model of the Wright Flyer using NewTek Lightwave’s standard toolset. Simple grayscale textures were applied to the model and people were created in Smith Micro Poser then imported into the scene. Motion blur was created by animating the propellers and using a “morph target” to give the illusion of the person moving during the exposure. Final elements such as sepia tone, vignette, and film grain were added in Adobe Photoshop.
