Revisiting Illustrations

The moon Daphnis in the Keeler gap.

Last month I created daily drawings for Planet Inktober. I created a digital version of a couple of those drawings. The above of Saturn’s moon Daphnis in the Keeler Gap of the rings. This version created on the iPad using the Procreate App and the Apple Pencil. Below is both the digital version and the painting of the Venus balloon mission. The original is India Ink on paper and the digital version is a 3D scene rendered in Adobe Dimensions.

2020 Planet Inktober Drawings

This year marks my third Inktober daily drawing challenge. This year I used the prompts from Planet Inktober. Prompts that focused on planetary science. This year to keep in the spirit of Inktober, each drawing started as a pen and ink drawing with less digital enhancements then the previous year. I am really pleased with my interpretation of the prompts and the execution of the art.

On October 20th of this year the OSIRIS REx spacecraft successfully retrieved a sample of the asteroid Bennu. After nearly two years of examining the asteroid, OSIRIS REx maneuvered it’d self to an optimal sample site. Once there it used a specially designed tool to contact and sample the asteroid’s surface. My Interpretation of the Spacing Guild Navigators from Dune

As the pandemic continues and riots, injustice, and politics permeate the news, I’ve been escaping into more science fiction. My last couple of posts have been fan art or concept art in science fiction genres. This post is no different. The internet has been talking about the recent trailer for the new Dune movie. One of the most fascinating characters in the Frank Herbert’s Dune universe are the Navigators of the Spacing Guild. In the storyline of Dune, intelligent machines are outlawed and humans have developed their mental ability to compensate. The Navigators are humans that are physically transformed for their role as human supercomputers to calculate and safely guide space transportation across vast distances of space. These are my concepts illustrations.

I don’t usually create fan art. I enjoyed watching the Star Wars series the Mandalorian. And decided to create some artwork based on the series. This was an opportunity to create some story keyframes and continue honing my skills. These images were drawn in Procreate for iPad using the Apple Pencil.

Tron-Inspired Aesthetic

This project is a bit of a departure from the typical artworks I post. The 1982 movie Tron was an imaginative look at what the world inside a computer might look like. This was followed up a 2010 sequel that built onto that aesthetic with updated designs for the vehicles and characters. What I like about this realm is that it is an environment that can have it’s own physics. It’s not bound by rules of gravity, friction, aerodynamics, and energy. This frees up the concept artist to truly imagine a unique and surreal world. My goal with this project was to create a cityscape that would fit into the Tron universe. I created nine 3D components that I can use as building blocks to create the city environment.

These components were placed along a grid with the various elements randomly dispersed. The elements were rendered out and atmospheric effects painted in using Procreate for iPad. Using this workflow I created these images which I can use as background plate for future projects.
